Gerard (Jerry) Appy

Biographical Information:
Gerard (Jerry) Appy's career in educational
television began in 1955 as associate director of the Center for
Continuing Education at the University of Georgia. There, he helped
organize the University's educational television station WGTV which
went on the air on May 23, 1960.
In 1962, Appy was elected to the National
Educational Television's Affiliate Committee which he then chaired
from mid-1963 to about mid-1964. At that time, he resigned the position
to help start the Educational Television
Services Division of the National
Association of Educational Broadcasters (NAEB). For six months,
working with C. Scott Fletcher,
Appy served as vice president of ETS and encouraged stations to join.
In 1965, Jerry Appy returned to National Educational
Television to serve as Director of Field Services (1965-1966) and then
Vice
President for Network Affairs (1967-1970). When NET merged with WNDT in
1970, he
stayed at the resulting WNET as
vice president until 1981. He also served as a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
board. From 1981 to 1986 he served as executive director of Oregon
Public Broadcasting.
Jerry Appy died on June 24th, 1990.
