Lee Frischknecht's career in noncommercial broadcasting spanned many years. In 1964, he became director of Field Services for National Educational Television. Then, in 1970, he became National Public Radio's Director of Network Affairs until 1972 when he became NPR's vice-president. From 1973 to 1977, Frischknecht served as President of National Public Radio, spending most of his efforts on relaions with member stations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Congress In 1978, Frischknecht left NPR and spent some time on various consulting projects with educational institutions. In 1980, he joined Arizona State University's station KAET as Education Telecommunications Manager, administering all educational and instructional facets of the station's operations. In 1985, he took over the position of Assistant General Manager and oversaw station planning and the Arizona School Services through Educational Technology (ASSET) program. An important part of this new job was the planning and development of a new FM radio station. Frischknecht retired from KAET in 1993 In this interview, Frischknecht details the problems and triumphs involved in putting the NPR system together.
