James S. MilesInterviewed by: Burt Harrison Public Radio Oral History Project September 14-15, 1978 James S. Miles entered public broadcasting at Purdue University early in World War II after a career in commercial radio in Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana. After working as Purdue's Radio Farm Director, he took over management of the school's pioneer radio station WBAA. He has worked as Director of Purdue's telecommunications activities with the exception of a year spent as the first Executive Director of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters (NAEB). In this interview, Miles discusses his forty years spent in radio broadcasting and related activities. He describes the formation of the NAEB Tape Network and the establishment of NAEB's first permanent headquarters. He also gives a detailed account of the formation and operation of the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction (MPATI).
