Interviewed by: Burt Harrison
Public Radio Oral History Project
October 13, 1978
Topics

Donald R. Quayle started his career in public broadcasting at Utah State University, where, as an undergraduate, he helped put Utah's first educational radio station on the air. He then spent a period as Program Manager of WOSU radio at Ohio State, moved on to Boston as Manager of WGBH-FM and as one of the founders of the Eastern Educational Radio Network, was with NETRC for a time, and spent five years as Executive Director of the Eastern Educational Television Network. Mr. Quayle was one of the early employees of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He left to become the first President of National Public Radio before returning to CPB as Senior Vice President for Broadcasting. In 1979, he became Vice President of WETA, a job he held until his retirement in 1989.

In this interview, Quayle talks about all the enterpises outlined above. He discusses people and projects; and he points out several times where he feels public radio missed opportunities to develop a national interconnected system before the advent of NPR.

Further information on Quayle's career as Senior Vice President for Broadcasting can be found in the Archives of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting: Donald R. Quayle Files.
