Administrative History/Information:

The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) provides leadership in educational communications and technology. An overview of its history is below:

  • In 1923, the National Education Association (NEA) established the Department of Visual Instruction (DVI) to promote more classroom communication through the use of wider resources.
  • In 1945, the NEA established the Division of Audio-Visual Instructional Service to promote new programs of audio-visual instruction
  • In 1947, DVI became the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction (DAVI)
  • In 1951, DAVI establishes the Archives and History Committee and an Archives Library.
  • Finally, in 1971, DAVI changed its name to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and separated from NEA
