Administrative History/Information:

  • Signed into law on May 1, 1962 as an amendment to the Communications Act of 1934
  • major provisions:
    • authorized appropriations of up to $32 million for five fiscal years for construction grants of educational television facilities:
      • up to 50 percent cost of new facilities
      • up to additional 25 percent total cost of improving existing facilities
      • no state would received more than $1 million
    • recipients included all four types of educational television stations:
      • university
      • school
      • state-agency
      • community corporation
    • specify criteria to use all educational television channels effectively:
      • equitable geographical distribution
      • serving greatest amount of audience
    • federal interference prohibited
