• Ford Foundation was created in Detroit in 1936 as a small philanthropic agency
• mission: receive and administer funds for various charitable purpose for the public welfare
• became both educational radio and educational television's greatest benefactor beginning in 1950
• One estimate of the Ford Foundation's contributions since 1950 to educational television directly and indirectly is about $300 million
• two areas of concern:
  • Fund for the Advancement of Education
  • Fund for Adult Education
  • creates the Educational Television and Radio Center: 1952
