Seven national educational organizations formed the Ad Hoc Joint Committee
on Educational Television on October 16, 1950:
- American Council on Education
- Association for Education by Radio
- Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities
- National Council of Chief State School Officers
- National Association of Educational Broadcasters
- National Association of State Universities
- National Education Association
- Persuaded the Federal Communications Commission in 1951 to reserve 209 noncommercial channels
- Changed name to Joint Council on Educational Television in 1955
- Became Joint Council on Educational Broadcasting in 1961 when the National Educational Television and Radio Center adopted its station activation duties
- Changed name to Joint Council on Educational Telecommunications in 1966:
- involved in issues of satellite access and educational channel allotments on cable systems
- involved in computer technology, media and education integration
- Started relying on outside funding, primarily from NASA, in 1968
- Central offices close in 1982 due to loss of funds, though members continue to meet into the 1990s.
