Administrative History/Information:

  • Seven national educational organizations formed the Ad Hoc Joint Committee on Educational Television on October 16, 1950:
  • Persuaded the Federal Communications Commission in 1951 to reserve 209 noncommercial channels
  • Changed name to Joint Council on Educational Television in 1955
  • Became Joint Council on Educational Broadcasting in 1961 when the National Educational Television and Radio Center adopted its station activation duties
  • Changed name to Joint Council on Educational Telecommunications in 1966:
    • involved in issues of satellite access and educational channel allotments on cable systems
    • involved in computer technology, media and education integration
  • Started relying on outside funding, primarily from NASA, in 1968
  • Central offices close in 1982 due to loss of funds, though members continue to meet into the 1990s.
