  • Founded 1966 by Thomas P.F. Hoving and other trustees including Ralph Ellison and Ralph Lowell (WGBH)
  • Received financial support from foundations including Twentieth Century Fund, Inc. and Carnegie Corporation of New York
  • organized to gain popular support for a strong and independent system of public television in the US
  • other advocacy efforts:
    • sought national promotions for regional and local stations programming
    • sought endorsement and support from national organizations including AFL-CIO and National Education Association
  • Changed its name to National Citizens Committee for Broadcasting/National Citizens Committee for Public Broadcasting: 1968
