  • began as the National Association of Educational Broadcasters Tape Network at University of Illinois with help of a $245,350 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation: 1951
  • way to exchange tapes among the stations
  • NAEB Tape Network became the National Educational Radio Network (NERN): 1963
  • transferred to National Public Radio in 1970
