Administrative History/Information:

  • Community broadcasters first meet in Seattle in 1973.
  • The National Alternative Radio Konvention meets in Madison, Wisconsin in 1975 to discuss the future of community radio
  • National Federation of Community Broadcasters is founded and its headquarters is set up in Washington, DC.
    • Initial mission:
      • Develop training manuals for stations
      • Help stations obtain FCC licenses
      • Promote participation of minorities and women at all levels
      • Establish the Program Exchange
    • Expanded mission:
      • Promote ideals and role of community radio in the public broadcasting system
      • Assist and advocate for the successful operation and funding of local stations and projects
      • Facilitate the production of high quality and innovative programming from diverse sources.
  • Following period of reorganization and administrative changes during the 1980s, NFCB relocates to San Francisco in 1995 where it combines its operations with Western Public Radio
