- Local Chicago educational and cultural organizations joined together to
promote the idea of a non-commercial channel for Chicago: 1953
- First program, "Report to the Teachers", broadcast: September 6, 1955
- Working with Chicago's Board of Education, WTTW became the first station
to televise college courses for credit via "TV College": 1956
- WTTW became involved with the Midwest
Program on Airborne Television Instruction (MPATI): 1961
- WTTW has won many awards including: 92 local Emmy Awards, 15 Corporation
for Public Broadcasting Awards, and 2 George Foster Peabody Awards: 1985-1994
- WTTW is owned by Window to the World Communications, Inc. which is a not-for-profit
corporation governed by 45 trustees representing the greater Chicago community
