"Digital Video/Digital Audio: Is Your Library Digital Ready? Understand the Past to Embrace the Future"
Presentation by Allan Rough, Nonprint Media Services, University of Maryland
Presentation is in .pdf form to be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Description: The Internet is becoming a major distribution method for digital audio and video materials. Now that we've experienced the e-journal and e-book revolution, are e-movies and e-music the "next big thing?" How will audio and video be marketed to libraries in the future? How will libraries identify, purchase, and provide access to digital audio and video? What are the technological and legal implications of in-house digitization of existing audio and video collections? What impact will the availability of digitized audio and video have on library audiovisual collections and collection development? Will the emerging copyright and licensing restrictions for these materials permit use in a library environment. This program will assess the impact of digital audio and video technology on the development of library media collections, as well as the ways that this technology is being used to preserve and deliver existing audio and video collections.
Objectives: Understand how the emerging commercial market for digital audio and video content may affect how audio and video materials in libraries will be selected, acquired, and delivered to library users in the future; Understand project design for analog-to-digital conversion projects and the nature of the hardware and software needed to convert analog audio or video collection in-house; Understand how the licensing issues pertaining to digital audio and video content will affect library policy development for access, use, and distribution of these materials.
Speakers:
M. Claire Stewart, Director, New Media Center, Northwestern University Library
