About Us

Established in 1986 on the campus of the University of Maryland, the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection (NTL) was begun by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1949.  Over the years, however, the collection outgrew its space at the Trust's Washington, D.C. offices.  Donated to the University of Maryland at College Park in 1986, NTL is fully supported by the University Libraries and has been enlarged and enhanced significantly in its campus setting.

THE COLLECTION

  • More than 18,000 volumes covering preservation topics from the technical to the aesthetic;
  • Nearly 2,000 vertical files containing brochures and preservation ephemera;
  • Over 18,500 U.S. postcards spanning the period 1903-1914 and depicting buildings and sites extant at that time;
  • More than 150 unpublished historic structures reports detailing significant American sites;
  • Hard copies of over 100 dissertations in historic preservation prepared in university programs around the country;
  • Current documents as well as backfiles of cultural resource reports prepared by the National Park Service (NPS) from 1935 to the present;
  • Over 300 periodical titles covering international, national, state, and local historic preservation topics;
  • Specialized periodicals, vertical files, and images relating to Maritime Preservation
  • Special collections, maintained jointly with the Department of Archives and Manuscripts, and including manuscript materials, oral histories, memorabilia, and the personal papers of prominent preservation leaders.
