Ethnomusicology
This is intended to be a very selective guide to reference sources in world music and
ethnomusicology research. Because it is not comprehensive, it should be used only as a starting
point. Ethnomusicology is an interdisciplinary field, drawing on information from many other
fields. You may also wish to consult guides on
anthropology and sociology
created by subject librarians in McKeldin reference.
The guide is divided into six sections:

- Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
- The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 20 vols. New York:

- The most important English language music encyclopedia. Of special interest to scholars of
world music is the index to ethnomusicological terminology in the appendix (vol. 20). There are
also other encyclopedias published by Grove of use to ethnomusicologists: The New Grove
Dictionary of American Music, The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, and The New
Grove Dictionary of Jazz. All are located in Music Ready Reference (behind the desk).

- The primary indexing source for over 500 music journals and magazines. Arranged by
author and subject. Issued monthly with annual or two-year cumulations. The Music Index
on CD-ROM covers materials from 1981-1991 and is available through the UMCP Libraries
Local Area Network.
- RILM Abstracts. Index Table ML1.I83
- A scholarly music indexing and abstacting service. Arranged by subject and author, each
entry includes a brief summary of the items content. MUSE RILM's CD-ROM product
covers the years 1969 to 1992, and includes more than 100,000 items from the Music Division of
the Library of Congress. Ask for the disc at the Music Library reference desk.
- UNCOVER
- A periodical indexing and document delivery service available through VICTOR, the
University of Maryland on-line catalog. Indexes thousands of periodicals from 1988 to the
present.
