David Barnett
David Barnett was born in New York City on December 1, 1907. He graduated with an academic degree from Columbia University and went on to study music at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and Juilliard Graduate School in New York City. Barnett studied piano with Alfred Cortot in Paris, where he also received his teaching diploma. At this time, he made his debut as a pianist as well as a published composer. Upon returning to the U.S., Barnett began to teach piano and music theory, as well as continuing his touring and composing careers. Barnett taught at Harvard, Columbia, Wellesley and the New England Conservatory of Music, as well as a stint as Headmaster of the Thomas School in Rowayton, CT. Barnett is also a published author, including the books "Living With Music" and "They Shall Have Music." Barnett died in 1985. IPAM holds multiple copies of most of Barnett's published compositions. These are available free of charge. Inquire of the IPAM curator for further information.
