Arthur De Greef was born at Louvain, Belgium on October 10, 1862. He showed a talent for music at a young age. From the age of 9, he studied with Brassin and Gaevert at the Brussels Conservatoire. Around the age of 17, De Greef met Liszt and received coaching and encouragement from him. De Greef began touring and his fame spread. A friend of Grieg and Saint-Saëns, De Greef was also known as an accomplished interpreter of Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. He continued to perform througout his life and also composed piano and chamber music. De Greef died in Brussels on August 29, 1940.
