Arthur Friedheim was born in Petrograd on October 26, 1859. He studied with Rubinstein and Liszt and made his public debut at the age of nine. Friedheim was a close friend of Liszt's and was considered one of his foremost interpreters. Friedheim made his first American tour in 1891. He taught at several institutions in North America. Aside from teaching and interpreting, Friedheim was also a composer. His recollections of his career, especially his period of study with Liszt, were published after his death in a book titled "Life and Liszt" (Taplinger, 1961). He died in New York on October 19, 1932.
