Emil Sauer was born in Hamburg, Germany on October 8, 1862. Sauer's initial piano training was with his mother, but Anton Rubinstein heard his playing in 1876 and recommended Sauer to Nikolaus Rubinstein, Anton's brother. Sauer then studied under Nikolaus, making his debut in North Germany in 1881. He attended Liszt's classes in Weimar during 1884. He made his London debut in 1882 and continued to perform in various parts of Europe. A widely admired pianist in his time, Sauer was also a composer and a teacher. Sauer taught at the Vienna Conservatory from 1901 to 1907 and returned there in later years. His many piano works include two Concertos, two Sonatas and a series of 29 Concert Etudes. He died on April 28, 1942.
