Mathew Arbuckle (1828-1883) was one of Patrick Gilmore's greatest cornet soloists. Arbuckle was born in Scotland but came to the United States in 1853 and joined Gilmore in 1873. Arbuckle and Gilmore's other great cornetist, Jules Levy, competed fiercely, and even came to blows during one concert. After leaving Gilmore's Band around 1880, Arbuckle become the conductor of D. L. Downing's Ninth Regiment Band and cornet soloist with Carlo A. Cappa's Seventh Regiment Band.
