Access: Materials from this collection must be used in the Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room, 10 to 5, Monday through Friday. Please make an appointment with the curator.

Biography: Richard Vickrey Madden was born in 1912. Madden attended Northwestern University, where he received his bachelors degree in 1933 and his masters in 1941, both in music education. Between 1937 and 1942, Madden served as band director for the Evanston and Haven High Schools, and in 1942 he become director of bands at Syracuse University.

Series Description:
Series I, Newspaper Clippings, contains clippings and partial sections of newspapers relating to Madden's violin and oboe performances, as well as band and orchestra concerts.

Series II, Journals, contains a copy of the Journal of Band Research from 1980. Madden provided information on William Revelli for an article by Michael Mark in this issue.

Series III, Newsletters, contains a copy of the American Bandmasters Association "Newsletter" prepared by Madden.

Series IV, Programs, contains concert programs, notes, correspondence, repertoire lists, and school bullitens documenting bands Madden either performed with, directed, guest conducted, supervised, or heard perform. These materials document Madden's career as band director in Evanston and Haven, as well as at Syrause University.

Series V, Papers, contains rough and final drafts of a paper by Madden entitled "Ill Woodwinds Nobody Blows Well." The paper discusses Madden's experiences with woodwinds, through private and public school instruction.

Series VI, Conference Materials, is arranged by the organization that sponsored the conference, and then chronologically. The series contains conference programs, individual programs, and other materials.

Series VII, Concert and Festival Materials, contains correspondence, bulletins, programs, manuals, and other materials regarding city, states, and national music competitions.

Series VIII, Clinic Materials, contains correspondence, promotional flyers, and band rosters, as well as lists of conductors' assignments, repertoire, selections for sight reading, offered courses, and group performances.

Series IX, Scrapbook, contians newspaper clippings, telegrams, notes, correspondence, concert and festival programs, and tickets, high school dance flyers and tickets, high school band trip memorabilia, poetry, and payrool stubs.
