While completing his own education, Michalski began teaching at Central Dauphin School in 1956. In 1959, he became music supervisor for Juanita joint schools in Pennsylvania. The next year, Michalski became director of bands at Clarion State College. Under his direction, the Clarion concert bands toured extensively, traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. As a leading college band director, Michalski was active as a tuba soloist, clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor, working throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Germany, England, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria.
