Biography: James Barnes (b. 1949) is Professor of Theory and Composition and Conductor of Bands at the University of Kansas. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Kansas, studying with John Pozdro, Edward Mattila, Charles Hoag and Allen McHose. He also studied conducting privately with Zuohuang Chen. In addition to his duties as professor at Kansas, he has performed as a tubist with numerous professional organizations.

Barnes has composed works for band, orchestra and various chamber ensembles. He has also done arranging for music publishers including Warner Brothers, Belwin-Mills and Southern. He has received numerous awards, grants and commissions for his compositions.

Barnes was elected to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1975 and to the American Bandmasters Association in 1986. He is also affiliated with the Kansas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the American Federation of Musicians, the International Military Music Society, Phi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
