Winner 1965: Frederick H. Beyer, Overture for Band [See an example]

Biography: Frederick H. Beyer (b. 1926) is a native of Chicago, but his higher education and professional career have taken him to the eastern and southeastern sections of the United States. He has a B.A. degree from Harvard University (1950), an M.A. degree in composition from Columbia University (1955), where he studied with Otto Luening and Jack Beeson, and a D.M.A. degree from Florida State University (1967), where his principal teacher was John Boda.

Beyer has had several teaching positions in his career. He taught choral and instrumental music in Florida at both Alachua High School (1954-56) and Largo Senior High School (1956-1965). He then spent one year as a doctoral assistant teaching sightsinging at Florida State University. In 1967 Beyer became Associate Professor of Music at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina where he taught conducting, music theory and composition. In 1982 he also became Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts and in 1988 was named Professor Emeritus at Greensboro College.

Beyer's principal band works are Overture for Band, Symphony for Band and Ricochet for Band and Tape. He has also composed for brass ensemble, orchestra and mixed voices. Among his honors are commissions by the Greensboro Symphony and the North Carolina Music Teachers National Association, Outstanding Service Awards from both the Pinellas County Music Educators Association and the Greater Largo Chamber of Commerce and being named honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi.
