Winner 1985: Joseph H. Downing, Symphony for Winds and Percussion

Biography: Joseph H. Downing has received his doctorate from Northwestern University, has taught at DePaul University and Northwestern University, and is currently Associate Professor at Syracuse University. In recent years, he has received commissions from the American Guild of Organists and the Barlow Foundation.

The Symphony for Winds and Percussion was premiered by the United States Army Band on March 23, 1985, at the American Bandmasters Association Convention, in Kiel, Wisonsin. Since then, the piece has received more than six hundred worldwide performances.
