Winner 1958: J. Mark Quinn, Portrait of the Land [See an example]

Biography: J. Mark Quinn was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1936. He began composing at the age of fourteen and wrote his first large work for band when he was a senior in high school. He has also written for orchestra, choral and chamber groups and for jazz ensembles.

Quinn received his bachelor's degree in composition from DePaul University where he studied with Leon Stein. In 1965 he became Associate Professor of Humanities at City College of Chicago, and in 1968 he became Chair of the Arts and Humanities Department. Among his honors was a special citation from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1966.
