Description: The Clarence Sawhill Collection contains correspondence, programs, and other materials relating to Sawhill's career as a university band director, primarily at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Statement of provenance: Gift of Kathleen Sawhill Porter (daughter), 1982.

Access: Materials from this collection must be used in the Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room, 10 to 5, Monday through Friday. Please make an appointment with the curator.

Biography: The educator and conductor Clarence Sawhill was born in Holton, Kansas in 1906. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Bethany College in 1929, and a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois in 1940. After teaching in the Kansas public schools, at the University of Illinois, and at the University of Southern California, Sawhill became director of bands at the University of California in Los Angeles in 1952. Sawhill retired from UCLA in 1972, and died in 1982.
