Performing Arts Library > Jacob Coopersmith Collection
The Jacob Coopersmith Collection of Handeliana
Introduction
Jacob Maurice Coopersmith (1903-1968), musicologist and music librarian, amassed over his
lifetime a personal research collection on the life and works of George Frideric
Handel (1685-1759). After Coopersmith's death, parts of this collection found their way into three different music libraries: the University of
Michigan, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and the University of Maryland . At Michigan are found the notes he kept for preparation of his Harvard University dissertation (An Investigation of Georg Friedrich Handel's Orchestral Style, including a thematic index of the printed works) and some unpublished music editions he had prepared. There also exist at Michigan some photostatic copies of Handel's last will and testament and other documents of his life. The Peabody collection comprises mainly 18th- and 19th-century Handel imprints. The Coopersmith Collection described herein is available at the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library of the University of Maryland.
The Coopersmith Collection at UM comprises books about Handel; 18th-, 19th-, and
20th-century published scores; manuscripts; librettos; photocopies of Handel documents; and
hundreds of articles related to Handel and his music. This finding aid treats the principal sections of
the collection separately, presenting highlights but by no means providing a catalogue of the
collection. The finding aid is divided into seven series:
Since Jacob Coopersmith was a Library of Congress music cataloger it is not surprising that he
cataloged his personal collection by the method employed there. He prepared a card file giving
full library cataloging to almost every item in the collection. Access is limited to the Library of
Congress call number arrangement a system which is standard not only at the Library of
Congress but also in most American academic libraries. Coopersmith did not prepare author or
title indexes, nor is it possible to search by subject except through the somewhat limited call
number access. The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library has added a number of the items to its
online catalog. You can access the rest of the collection through the Coopersmith card
catalog and through a general knowledge of the Library of Congress classifications M, ML, and MT.
The largest portion of the Coopersmith Collection consists of a considerable assembly of
Handel-related literature. Coopersmith gathered and cataloged over 600 books, journals,
exhibition and sale catalogs, journal offprints, concert programs, and various documents related to
Handel and to 18th-century musical culture. Roughly one-half of the books are devoted to
Handel biography and criticism. The rest, while not addressing Handel exclusively, are relevant
to Handel research. Among the more interesting items are a beautifully preserved copy of the
Charles Burney "Commemoration" published on the hundredth anniversary of Handel's birth;
18th-century librettos of Esther and Acis and Galatea; and catalogues from the
sales of the Cummings and Aylesford Collections which took place during World War I. These
and other items of interest are described below.

Scores & Manuscripts
Of the approximately 150 Handel and Handel-related scores, the largest number are
20th-century editions, including many Novello and Baerenreiter publications. A few 19th-century
editions are to be found as well, but of greatest interest are the copyist's manuscripts. Two
volumes of horn parts for operatic works which were originally part of the Aylesford Collection
(now the Newman Flower Collection in the Henry Watson Music Library in Manchester,
England) found their way into Coopersmith's hands, along with three volumes of duets, copied by
"S5", [for this and other "S" references, see Jens Peter Larsen, Handel's Messiah (New
York: Norton, 1957)], from the Lennard Collection. These and other interesting items are
described below.

Handel Clipping File
One of the more interesting parts of the Coopersmith Collection is a set of eight three-ring binders
which Coopersmith called the Handel Clipping File. These are filled with Handel-related items
culled from a great variety of sourcesjournals, catalogs, newspapers, concert programs and so
forthdating from the 18th-century to the mid-1960s. Most of the items are pasted or taped
onto both sides of blank leaves; there are 323 numbered leaves altogether.
Coopersmith included the contents of this Clipping File in his card catalog, typing a separate card
for nearly every entry. He created call numbers for these items using the classification
ML410.H13, which is a general classification for Handel biography and criticism. Following this
call number is the designation "HCL" (for Handel Clipping Leaf?) And a leaf number referring to
the recto or the verso of the leaf. HCL 168r, for example, refers to an item on the recto of leaf
168.
Unfortunately these clippings are not arranged in any special order or categorization, so it is
impossible to know exactly what is in the Clipping File without examining the catalog cards, or
the file itself, item by item.
Periodicals Analyzed in the Coopersmith
Collection
Portions of Coopersmith's card catalog are devoted to "analyzing" several major periodicals. In
other words, he searched these publications for significant Handel-related articles and then created
a catalogue card for each article. The following is a list of these periodicals, indicating their call
numbers, the time span covered by the catalog, and the number of articles entered.
Haendel-Jahrbuch (ML410.H13 H22). 1928-33 (28 articles) and 1955-57 (88
articles).
Journal of the American Musicological Society (ML27.U5 A83363). 1952-67 (7
articles)
Music & Letters (ML5 .M64). 1950-53 (3 articles)
Music Library Association Notes (ML27 .U5 M695). 1944-67 (14 articles).
Music Review (ML5 .M657). 1947-67 (30 articles).
Musica (ML5 .M71357). 1955-56 (19 articles)
Musical Quarterly (ML1 .M725). 1917-67 (28 articles)
Musical Times (ML5 .M85). 1950-1968 (157 articles)
Microfilms of Handel Manuscripts
Microfilms of Handel manuscripts from collections in Great Britain, Germany, and the United
States are gathered together in the Music Library at the University of Maryland. Although these
microfilms are not part of the original Coopersmith Collection, their relevance to Handel studies
warrants a brief mention here. Detailed inventories of the contents of the items will be found in
Martha Ronish, The Autograph Manuscripts of George Frideric Handel: A Catalogue
(Ph.D. dissertation, The University of Maryland, 1984), or more recently, Donald Burrows and Martha J. Ronish A Catalogue of Handel's Musical Autographs (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1994).
