Using course reserves in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library

Reserves are kept at the Performing Arts Library Circulation Desk, and are available for two-hour loans during the semester, although Circulation Staff may reduce the loan period during high-use periods. Valid UM identification (see requirements for general loans) must be presented to borrow any reserve items.

The Overdue fines for course reserve materials are $5.00 per item for the first hour or fraction thereof, and $2.50 per hour thereafter. In cases of repeated lateness or other abuse of the course reserves services, the Circulation staff may suspend a student's right to borrow reserve materials.

Placing course reserves

Teaching faculty may place Course Reserve requests for books, scores and audio-visual material three ways:

  • In Person at the circulation/reference desk at the Performing Arts Library (preferably on a typed or wordprocessed document). The Performing Arts Library allows instructors to place on reserve scores, personal audio and video recordings, class notes, homework solutions, sample exams, and other items. Personal copies of items for placement on reserves should be clearly marked as such. Please remember that all copyrighted materials placed on reserve must contain a notice of copyright.
See note below for placing articles and book chapters on reserve.

  • Email (preferably via and attached Word document) to Mary Scott

When submitting a request please include the following information:

  • Course Number; Professor name
  • Title
  • Author/Composer
  • Call number including Issue/Volume/Year

Please do not include any items that can not be placed on reserves, for examples reference, bound journals or other non-circulating material.

Materials that have to be purchased by the library for reserve must be ordered early. Please allow up to *60 days* for acquiring the materials.

If assistance is needed in finding resources, please contact Stephen Henry or call (301) 405-9256 for *music* materials. For *theatre* and *dance* materials please contact Leahkim Gannett or call (301) 405-9117.

Articles and Book Chapters

Journal articles and chapters in books will be put on reserve electronically. These requests must be taken to McKeldin Library for processing. See the instructions on this page: Course Reserves at McKeldin Library, especially the paragraphs on Articles and Book Chapters, which explain that these will be electronic reserves, with links either to online sources or to scanned copies of articles/chapters provided by faculty (when notice of copyright is included).

If you have any questions concerning Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library course reserves, contact Mary Scott or call (301) 405-9223.
