Donald M. Garvelmann Collection Arrives at IPAM!

A significant recent addition to IPAM is the collection of the late Donald M. Garvelmann of New York, which arrived in November and is now being processed. Mr. Garvelmann was one of the great private collectors of piano music and he amassed large quantities of obscure piano scores from the 19th and 20th centuries. His collection is especially strong in little-known Russian composers and editions, in works of composer-pianists of the Romantic era, and in music for two pianos. With Mr. Garvelmann's collection, IPAM's already impressive score collection is now augmented by hundreds of additional rare publications.

American Bandmasters Association comes to UM in March!

The University of Maryland will host the 2003 American Bandmasters Association Convention featuring concerts and events at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center between March 5 and 8. Look for a new exhibition of treasures from the ABA Research Center and performances by UM's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the U.S. Navy Band, the Allentown Band, the University of Akron Symphonic Band, and the Herndon High School Wind Ensemble.

The ABA Research Center makes its home at Special Collections in Performing Arts. For more information please visit the ABA Research Center page.

New State-of-the-Art Online Catalog for UM Libraries!

On January 6, 2003, the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) launched a new and improved online library catalog. This state-of-the-art online catalog, which replaces VICTORWeb, offers many new advanced features (descriptions can be found at http://www.lib.umd.edu/PUB/catalogusmai.html). This is a giant step forward for online services for the growing University of Maryland community as it provides superior access to real and virtual collections and seemingly endless possibilities for future expansion.

Questions about the new catalog may be directed to Yale Fineman, Music Librarian (301-405-9221) or Judy Markowitz, Theatre/Dance Librarian (301-314-1316), Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library.
