GUIDELINES FOR PACKAGING:

For additional information on packaging you may go to: UPS Guidelines for good packaging.

  1. Cartons: Use corrugated cartons in good, rigid condition, with all flaps intact. The carton should be of a reasonable size and shape, no larger than 15 3/4"x10 3/4"x15". If a carton is to be reused, be sure that it is in good condition with no punctures, tears, rips or corner damage, and all flaps are in good condition. Remove previous address information and any UPS shipper number impressions from the carton.
  2. Packing the carton: The size of the carton should not be too large for the material that is to be shipped. Cartons are stacked in transit and will crush or tear if not properly packed. Books should be placed so the weight is distributed equally, and cushioned so they won't slip back and forth, or crush in transit. Use cushioning material such as paper, newspaper, etc. to fill in if necessary.
  3. Closing the carton: Use a tape designed for shipping that is at least two inches wide. First, tape the center seam using a three inch turn on each side. Second, seal the edge seams. This method may be used to seal both top and bottom of carton. If a carton has a lid (such as photocopy paper boxes), tape the lid securely so it will not come off in transit
  4. "Jiffy" shipping bags: Shipping bags should be in good condition with no punctures, tears, or rips. If necessary, remove previous address information and UPS shipper number impressions. Seal the bags with staples, then tape over the staples across the opening. Staples have a tendency to tear up hands if the bag is not stapled correctly.
  5. Labeling: Use a UPS shipping label or appropriate mailing label. See below for examples. The address should be typed, printed or stamped clearly on the label. Always include the zip code, complete street address, and any apartment number. UPS will not accept P.O. box numbers. Write in the originating department under "UM Libraries" in the return address.

Note: Label should be placed on top of carton but NOT over the seam.
