EMPLOYEE INITIATED REDUCTION IN WORK HOURS1. Library Policy. At the discretion of the Dean of Libraries, a request for a temporary reduction (for more than 30 days) in required work hours may be granted.(Employees seeking reductions for 30 days or less should utilize earned annual leave, personal leave or request leave without pay.) Requests covering more than 30 days will be granted primarily for medical and/or family need. Requests may be granted for up to six months and may be extended, with adequate justification, documentation and review, to a maximum of one year. Situations which warrant reductions in work hours for more than one year will require a more permanent arrangement. 2. Procedures. All requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. They must be initiated by the employee and submitted in writing, via the chain of command, to the Dean of Libraries. Requests should include anticipated duration, appropriate support documentation (i.e. medical certificate), and be accompanied by the supervisor's recommendation and impact statement. A request for an extension must be submitted by the employee, reviewed, and approved by the Dean of the Library one month prior to expiration of an approved reduction in work hours. Baring notification to the contrary, the Libraries Human Resources Office will submit the required documentation to restore the employee to his/her initial hourly requirement effective upon expiration of an approved request. NOTE: Requests for exempt staff are also subject to approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost.
