STUDENT ASSISTANT WAGES1. Position Levels The UM Libraries have two levels of student assistant positions. STUDENT ASSISTANT I (SA I) Undergratuate Student beginning hourly rate = $7.00. Maximum hourly rate = $8.75 This is the beginning level position for student assistants. Experience or expertise in a particular area is not required.
Tasks performed at this level may require relevant library experience, graduate-level course work, or expertise in a specific area, such as knowledge of a language other than English. 2. Approvals A director may delegate approval to hire at a student assistant II level and to grant rate increases above $.25/hour. The maximum hourly rates are established by UM Personnel Services. Student assistant hires and promotions are processed by the Libraries Human Resources Office. 3. Merit Increases A student assistant is eligible for a $.25/hour merit raise after every 500 hours of service or on the completion of two semesters of library employment, whichever comes first. This increase is contingent on a supervisor's favorable evaluation of a student's performance and on available funds. Requests for merit rates should be submitted to the Libraries Human Resources Office on a Student Assistant Payroll Information Sheet. The request should be submitted prior to the pay-period in which the merit increase is to take effect.
