| Administrative Memos > #28: Professional Conferences and Meetings - Work Hours
| ||
PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS - WORK HOURSFaculty and exempt staff are salaried employees and as such are paid by the job (i.e. the duties and responsibilities of the position)and not by the hour. Attendance at conferences and meetings is often an expectation of the position. As salaried employees, they are not eligible for compensatory time but are expected to manage their work schedule to meet the needs of their position. For insurance purposes, faculty and exempt staff (permanent and contractual) should record time spent traveling to and attending conferences and meetings as duty days. To be eligible for duty day status, the activity attended must be directly related to the employee's duties and responsibilities. This applies regardless of whether travel or meetings occur on weekends, holidays, or during the regular workweek. Nonexempt staff and hourly employees, who attend conferences and/or meetings at the Library's request, must count time spent traveling to and attending meetings as work time. With appropriate approval, work hours of nonexempt staff and hourly employees in excess of 40 hours > per week will be paid at the time-and-a-half premium rate. With Library approval, nonexempt staff may waive overtime pay in favor of time-and-a-half compensatory leave (form available in the Libraries Human Resources Office).
