NATURE OF WORK:

The Digital Collections Librarian will support and manage projects coordinated by the office of Digital Collections and Research. Working in a team-based environment and sharing or dividing duties as assignments and skills indicate with a second Digital Collections Librarian, the incumbent will research, evaluate, test and recommend various methodologies, standards, and software used in the creation of digital collections and their long-term preservation; contribute to best practice documentation; provide expertise to others in the library and in the university in the creation of digital collections; participate in grant writing and training initiatives.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

        EDUCATION: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or a master's degree in a relevant disciplinary area.

        EXPERIENCE: Minimum two years of relevant experience in a digital library or digital humanities center or initiative. Demonstrated experience bringing digital projects to completion. Supervisory experience desirable.

        SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to work collaboratively and to set and manage priorities in a team environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Interest and ability to meet promotion and permanent status requirements as a member of the library faculty of the UM Libraries.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead and/or support project management of DCR-coordinated projects.
  • Manage projects and offer expertise in projects across media, including still and moving images, audio, born digital, and text encoding (TEI, EAD, and related XML technologies);
  • Manage project teams comprised of individuals with a wide range of professional backgrounds;
  • Provide advice to colleagues in the UM Libraries and the University in the creation of digital collections;
  • Create, manage, and offer expertise in web design;
  • Offer expertise and manage metadata creation within the digital library environment;
  • Participate in tasks that develop capabilities within/for DCR and the Libraries generally. Participate in researching, evaluating, and testing methodologies, standards, and software used in the creation of digital collections and their long-term preservation;
  • Maintain, update, and enhance Best Practice Guidelines for Digital Collections;
  • Participate in grant writing;
  • Participate in and design workshops in project design and management, as well as digital library technologies;

Manage other general duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain professional familiarity with current trends in the conversion of analog to digital resources, born-digital resources, as well as the long-term management and preservation of digital objects in support of UM Library projects;
  • Manage a broad range of tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints;
  • Serve on library and university teams, committees, and task forces as appropriate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
