POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager of Integrated Library Systems manages and supports the operation, integration, and enhancement of the core library information systems and applications. The Manager plans and implements new software releases and enhancements, works collaboratively with consortium member library staff and IT colleagues; identifies, recommends, tests and implements software; provides user and operational support for library systems; provides management and statistical reports on systems operations.
ORGANIZATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
The UM Libraries’ Information Technology Division (ITD) supports the information technology needs of the University of Maryland Libraries on the College Park Campus and the integrated library system applications for the University System of Maryland and Affiliated institutions (USMAI ). The Manager of the Integrated Library System Applications reports to the Director of Information Technology & Technical Services. The manager serves on/participates in Libraries, consortium and University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Supervises staff who support and maintain the operation, integration, and enhancement of the core library information system and related applications; 40%
- Plans and implements the workplan for the development and enhancement of the library system, including new software releases and enhancements, 35%
- Works collaboratively with the consortium member library staff and IT colleagues; informs and educates Libraries’ administration, the USMAI Council of Library Directors and staff; 20%
- Provides management and statistical reports on systems operations; facilitates communications concerning the ILS within the consortium and UM; 5%
- Coordinates services with vendors, provides technical expertise, advanced knowledge and independent judgment; keeps abreast of relevant literature and technology. 5%

Formal Leadership:
Supervisor: participates in the selection process of new employees; assists with performance appraisals; disciplinary problems are referred to a higher level. Performs similar and higher level tasks.

Very General Supervision: Resolves most questions, accomplishes most tasks without guidance.
Interactions:
Interacts with library staff, staff at member consortium libraries, technical staff at both College Park and the member campus IT offices.

Physical Working Conditions: Normal Office Environment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Academic Level: MLS from an ALA accredited school, or a Master’s degree from an accredited school in a
related field such as computer science or management information systems,
Required, all of the following:
- At least three years experience supporting integrated library systems in a medium to large library system;
- At least one year experience supervising and mentoring staff;
- Experience developing and/or supporting library solutions for acquisitions, cataloging, interlibrary loan, or other library workflow processes;
- Strong organizational and analytical skills, communication (oral and written) skills, ability to work collaboratively with both technical and library staff with widely varied skill sets and technical knowledge;
- Demonstrated experience in project management;
- Understanding of the MARC record;
Interest and ability to meet promotion and permanent status requirements of the UM Libraries.
Preferred:
- Experience with the ExLibris ALEPH System;
- 2 years of management experience in an IT environment;
- Experience working in an UNIX environment;
- knowledge of scripting and/or programming languages such as Perl, Java, Oracle, and/or SQL; knowledge of protocols for search and retrieval, messaging and networking such as Z39.50, SRW/SRU, and FTP;
- Experience with relational databases;
- Experience working in a library functional area, preferably in an academic research library environment.
