The Government Documents & Maps
collection contains more than two million government documents and nearly
500,000 maps. It serves as the Regional
Federal Depository Library for Maryland, Delaware, and the District of

Responsibilities:
In a team-based environment, this entry-level
position provides GIS and maps-related reference and consultation assistance to
users; maintains GIS workstations by troubleshooting hardware, installing
software, coordinating technical support, and making recommendations for
software purchases and upgrades; develops and teaches GIS workshops, course-specific
sessions, and customized seminars for the broader university and external
community; maintains and enhances the GIS/Maps website; designs and produces
course materials and resource guides.
Promotes GIS services and the Map Collection through outreach
activities, creating exhibits and planning promotional events. Participates in campus-wide and other
collaborations to expand GIS services and develop digitization priorities for
cartographic maerials. Staffs the
Government Documents & Maps reference desk. Provides staff training and peer training as needed. Contibutes to collection development
initiatives for cartographic materials, GIS related texts and data sets.
Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree
from an ALA-accredited library program.
Knowledge of maps and other cartographic information resources. Familiarity with GIS software applications
and digital and spatial data; solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office
applications and HTML. Strong commitment to providing quality public service. Effective oral and written communication
skills.Preferred: Undergraduate degree in geography or a related field.
Experience:
Demonstrated
ability using GIS applications, specifically ArcView software; familiarity with
digital spatial data, computer hardware, and technical requirements for
GIS. Demonstrated ability developing
databases and creating spreadsheets and Web pages. Experience with developing and presenting course-related and
general GIS instruction sessions and materials. Preferred: Experience providing public service for cartographic
materials in all formats in an academic library. Collection development
experience.
