Position Title: Digital Libraries Developer
Position Rank: Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY
This position will support the office of Digital Collections and Research (DCR), a new initiative at the University of Maryland Libraries. The success of this initiative depends on the development of a technical infrastructure that is based on open source software. Moreover, individual collection-based projects also require a high degree of customization, integrated with vendor software. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to support the creation of a framework for development and support of digital library collections and initiatives by interacting with a wide variety of individuals in the library including curators and metadata sspecialists. This position will be jointly managed by the Assistant Dean and Head of Digital Collections and Research, and Manager of Library Systems Development in the Information Technology Division (ITD): as a member of the ITD technical team the successful candidate will work with other programmers under the lead of the Manager; as a member of the DCR team the successful candidate will work with other staff dedicated to the Digital Libraries initiative, under the lead of the Assistant Dean.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
To be elibible, the applicant must hold a BS in Computer Science or related field +3 years relevant experience, preferably working in a digital library, digital publishing, or digital humanities environment; or a MS in Computer Science or related field, and at least one year work experience, preferably in a digital library, digital publishing, tools development, or digital humanities environment. Significant experience working in a UNIX environment is required. Demonstrated ability to program Java is required; experience with C/C++ is highly desirable. Experience with XML/XSLT/SOAP/PERL/PHP/ and related technologies is highly desired. The sucessful candidate must be self-motivated, able to work in a team environment, and be service-oriented.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Participate and support Digital Library projects as assigned
  • Work across the spectrum of services needed to support a digital library initiative including
    • web services
    • repository configuration
    • staff administration tools
    • metadata crosswalking
    • indexing/search engine
  • Participate in the ongoing support of existing services, as well as develop new services
  • Create technical documentation
  • Keep apprised of new technologies and solutions
  • Participate in Library-wide and Campus-wide committees and teams as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Currently none; possibility of supervision of graduate students in future.
