An opportunity for a public service-oriented individual to work within the team enviroment of the University of Maryland (UM) Libraries in College Park, the largest university library system in the region and in close proximity to the nation's capital. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Libraries at the University of Maryland College Park seek a web programmer to provide general development and support for web applications run by the Digital Technology Interface Services department, such as content management systems, interfaces for information discovery, authentication, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications. Other responsibilities include supporting back-end operations and enterprise integration with an emphasis on web interfaces; customizing and integrating commercial and open-source applications; and original development. The developer will be involved in the full life-cycle of an application including installation, configuration, development, performance tuning, bug diagnosis, bug fixing, following change management policies and using subversion, and other continuing support. Background in Flash, design, and/or graphic arts is a plus. In addition to requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities include: ability to code in multiple languages and environments, such as PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, C, C#, JavaScript; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; ability to keep abreast of new and changing technologies and the types of applications which use them (such as content management systems, wikis, blogs, search tools); good oral/written communication skills. QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; 3 years experience with any two of the following programming languages/environments: PHP, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Ruby, .NET programming; 3 years experience with relational databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle; 3 years experience application development on any Unix/Linux or Windows platform; experience in developing applications using web technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, and AJAX.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, experience with any content management system.
