NATURE OF WORK: Based in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL) and working under the direction of the Head of MSPAL and within the collaborative, team-based learning environment of the University of Maryland Libraries, the Music Librarian works with other members of the MSPAL Public Services Group to design and administer an innovative program for public service and user education in the performing arts that incorporates new technologies, interdisciplinary models, and analysis of user needs. Serves as the primary subject liaison to the School of Music.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science and/or other post-baccalaureate degree in music with library experience. Subject background in music demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, publications, or substantive experience. Preferred: Additional graduate degree in musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, or music education.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience providing reference and instructional services and/or collection development and management in an academic music or performing arts library.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Understanding of current and emerging trends in librarianship, music, and the performing arts and familiarity with information resources, both print and electronic, related to the performing arts. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively with faculty, students, and library staff in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to meet promotion and permanent status requirements of library faculty.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In collaboration with the Theatre and Dance Librarian and other members of the MSPAL Public Services Group, designs and administers an innovative program for public service and user education in the performing arts that incorporates new technologies, interdisciplinary models, and analysis of user needs.

  • Develops, administers, and participates in a program to provide regular reference service at a public desk in MSPAL.
  • Provides specialized and general reference service to users with information needs in the areas of music (primarily) , theatre, and dance.
  • Participates in Libraries-wide online reference services.
  • Seeks ways to monitor user needs and adapt reference and user education programs as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with MSPAL curators (Special Collections in the Performing Arts and International Piano Archives at Maryland) and other members of MSPAL to create integrated access for users to the disparate collections.

Serves as primary liaison to the faculty and students in the School of Music to insure that their information needs are being met and to promote the Libraries’ services and resources.

  • Provides course-related library instruction and research consultations in support of music courses.
  • Develops and updates course web pages and subject guides in support of research in music.
  • Receives requests for additions to the music collection and forwards them to the appropriate selector.

Develops and manages electronic and print music reference collection.

Assists MSPAL Head in developing and maintaining general collections in music, particularly in ethnomusicology, popular music, and jazz.

Oversees delivery of multimedia information to users of MSPAL

  • Monitors equipment, provides instruction to staff and users, recommends upgrades.
  • Serves as a liaison to Nonprint Media Services.
  • Manages the daily operations of a pilot project for digital audio reserves services.

Promotes services available through the libraries.

Serves on library and university committees as appropriate.
