The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation is the largest independent grant making foundation focused exclusively on the Washington Metropolitan area. The funding priorities of the foundation are Arts & Humanities, Community Service, Education, and Health. In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the foundation awarded over $13 million in grants to roughly 400 non-profit organizations. Grants range from $10,000 to over $100,000.

Deadlines: Application deadlines are at 4:00pm on March 1, July 1 and November 1.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is currently funding programs that evaluate local technology needs, purchase equipment, train library staff, and help libraries build public support for long-term funding.

Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE)

The program supports and disseminates innovative reform projects that promise to be models for improving the quality of postsecondary education and increasing student access. The U.S Department of Education, which administers these funds through the Office of Postsecondary Education, offers many other funding opportunities that may also be of interest.

Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)

IMLS offers funding to libraries through four areas of competition:

Education and Training, Research and Demonstration, Preservation or Digitization of Library Materials, and Model Programs of Library and Museum Cooperation.

J. Paul Getty Trust

Getty grants funding for projects related to museums, art, architectural conservation, and the history of art. The Getty Trust is currently granting funding for projects on research, conservation, and educational and professional development. Application procedures and deadlines vary by grant category. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. The NHPRC supports projects to research and develop means to preserve authentic electronic records, assist archives through a network of state partners, preserve and make accessible records and archives, publish papers documenting America's founding era, publish papers documenting other eras and topics important to an understanding of American history, and improve professional education for archivists and historical documentary editors.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

Provide various federal grants in theater, arts, literature, and museums.
