Our Role As Government Depositories/Interlibrary Loan

For the second consecutive year, Government Documents/Maps staff hosted a meeting for selective depository libraries from Delaware, the District of Columbia and Maryland. Some 49,000 retrospective government documents bibliographic records were added to the online catalog, for a total of 197,878, significantly improving access to the Government Documents collection. Government Documents/Maps staff increased significantly the hours of operation in the Map Room, providing 25 hours of public service per week. A Map Room open house was held to promote awareness.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Library (EPSL) continued to add to the U.S. Patent and Trademark collection and provide easy access, resulting in impressive usage. Patent and trademark questions increased over last year and circulation of technical reports also rose.

The Libraries continued to play an essential role as part of the Maryland Interlibrary Loan Organization which services all public, academic, and secondary schools as well as corporate libraries in the state. Interlibrary Loan showed a major increase over last year in borrowing requests initiated – 22,718 compared to 21,536, or up 5.2%, and in borrowing requests filled – 18,942 compared to 16,561 – an increase of 12.6%.
