Performing Arts Library

The Performing Arts Library (PAL) continued planning its relocation to a new facility in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at Maryland. The new library will open for the fall 2000 semester.

A recital, exhibition, and reception on February 6, 1999 celebrated the establishment of the Walter Hautzig Collection and Mr. Hautzig's gift of the Mieczyslaw Munz Collection to the International Piano Archives at Maryland (IPAM). Mr. Hautzig, an internationally-acclaimed pianist, teacher and recording artist, presented a brief piano recital and offered some reminiscences of his teacher, Mr. Munz. Dean Lowry accepted the collections on behalf of the Libraries.

Cosponsored by the PAL, the fourth biennial Charles Fowler Colloquium on Innovation in Arts Education was held on campus in April. The colloquium featured internationally distinguished speakers who addressed "Enlightened Advocacy: Implications of Research for Arts Education Policy and Practice." Participants in the two-day colloquium represented school systems, colleges and universities, professional associations, arts councils, state and federal agencies, and publishers. In another even, "A Centenary Tribute to Robert Casadesus," a special recital marking the 100th year since the birth of the renowned French pianist-composer-teacher, was held at the French Embassy in Washington in May and featured a special exhibition prepared by IPAM, based on its Robert and Gaby Casadesus Collection. IPAM also obtained a collection of autograph letters from Harold Schonberg, former chief music critic of The New York Times, and a collection of artist files from Henry Z. Steinway of Steinway & Sons, featuring Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubenstein, Erno Balogh, Josef Hoffman, Glenn Gould, and the Casadesus Family.

The Special Collections in Performing Arts (SCPA) obtained funding from the American Bandmasters Association to develop a Website of prize-winning compositions for band featuring composer biographies and photographs, information about the compositions, and soundbites. SCPA also received over 700 items as additions to the Hugo Keesing Collection of Music in Popular Culture. Access was provided via VICTORWeb to the 3,000 books and scores in the Keesing Collection. The collection supports curricular expansion in the School of Music that includes a new course, "The History of Rock Music."
