Planning and Administrative Services
The Libraries produced a revised strategic plan in April. Many goals and initiatives were updated, and divisions, units and individuals within the Libraries were attentive to relating their own work plans to the library-wide plan. The 1999 plan also provided new statements of mission, values and vision. The review and planning documents are available on the Libraries' website at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/UMCP/.
Facilities planning occupied part of the year as well. Foremost were the changes to the Hornbake Library; namely to close and remove its undergraduate collections from the first two floors to make way for renovations in anticipation of the move there of most Special Collections from McKeldin Library. The campus' Facilities Advisory Committee and Facilities Council heard proposals for a combined Art/Architecture Library at the site of the present Preinkert Field House, and a new Engineering/Science Library, bringing together collections now fragmented across several libraries on campus.
Approximately 200 staff members attended a "Vision, Values and Leadership" session on Aug. 20, 1998 to record their ideas as to what the Libraries' work culture ideally should be. The session led to the establishment of a Work Culture Task Force and a Strategic Planning Task Force. The Work Culture Task Force, with broad input, developed a set of recommendations for improving the work environment.
