Strengthening the Collections

Horizontal Rule

The Libraries' Collections continued to expand as the number of volumes held approached the 2.7 million mark and titles held grew to over 1.5 million. At the same time the Libraries continued to be the recipient of some extremely rare and valuable special collections.

The Broadcast Pioneers Library of American Broadcasting acquired the Arthur Godfrey Collection from WNET/Channel 13 in New York City. This vast collection, rich in correspondence, photographs, films, videotape, wire recordings, audiotape reels, financial records, and musical scores, chronicles in extensive detail the life, times, career, and achievements of one of this century's radio and television giants.

Thanks to the generosity of Charles E. Peterson, architectural historian, restorationist and planner, the Peterson Archive and Library of Early American Building Technology and Historic Preservation was established. Through the Peterson gift, the Libraries will be able to enhance their growing collection of historic preservation documentation initiated in 1986 with the acquisition of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection.

The Art Library received an important gift of 850 books on medieval, Islamic, and Asian art through the generosity of the late Anthony Geber, a Foreign Service Officer who served in a number of posts in Europe and Asia and who received his Master's degree in art history from the University of Maryland. Mr. Geber's gift included several rare and valuable titles which are no longer in print and difficult to obtain through the antiquarian market. Work continued during the year on preservation processing the more than 1.5 million photos contained in the Baltimore News-American collection.
