Our Role as DepositoriesThe Libraries revitalized their role and responsibility as a Federal Depository Library and they began automated circulation of Government Documents in June 1998. Future access to more of these collections was provided by the purchase of 246,521 retrospective government documents bibliographic records, soon to be included in the online catalog. The Libraries also continued to serve as an affiliate of the Maryland Office of Planning, State Data Center. Government Documents/Maps staff hosted a meeting of the selective depository libraries in the area, established a listserv, and sponsored a national regional depositories meeting in the spring. All of these efforts were recognized in a much-improved inspection report of the Libraries' federal depository library status from the Government Printing Office. The establishment of a Government Information Center in McKeldin Library was completed, providing users with a one-stop location for accessing government documents and geographic information systems electronically. The Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPSL) Library continued to build the U.S. Patent and Trademark collection and provide easy access, resulting in increased usage. Patent and trademark questions answered showed a steady increase over FY 97, up 19% and 12% respectively. Circulation of technical reports rose by nearly three percent to 2,606 items.
