Diversity as a Way of Life

Horizontal Rule
The Libraries took an active part in increasing diversity in the work place, in collections, and among the staff during the year. The effort was spearheaded by a Coordinator for Services to Diverse Populations and a Diversity Committee. Plans were finalized to initiate a permanent, on-going training component on diversity in staff development programs. In the area of collection development, the Libraries highlighted the diversity of the collections by presenting a panel exhibit entitled Celebrating Black History Month: Images from the Maryland Room Collections.

Outside the campus community, the Libraries gained national recognition and distinction as a leader in the area of diversity and as a model of best practices for other Association of Research Libraries institutions to emulate. Writer's Block: Disability on Campus, the Libraries' in-house-produced video, was instrumental in the creation of this new identity. The video was included in the American Library Association National Conference Diversity Fair and the Libraries were proud to be one of the 50 national representatives at this Fair.
