New Plans for Major Gifts

Beginning in mid-year the Libraries launched a Major Gifts initiative as part of the University's "BoldVision--Bright Future" campaign. Initial planning included a review of past donors, preparation of campaign literature, identification of volunteer leaders, and development of strategies for reaching top prospects. The campaign effort received a major boost by a significant gift from Dr. R. Lee Hornbake (pictured at left), former Vice President for Academic Affairs and namesake for Hornbake Library, to establish an endowment for the purchase of books and other materials. Dr. Hornbake also agreed to serve as honorary chair of the Libraries' Campaign Committee.

Friends of the Libraries

Friends of the Libraries enjoyed a very successful year highlighted by its second annual gala featuring as guest speaker the popular ABC Television News and National Public Radio newscaster, Cokie Roberts. Some 140 committed Friends gathered at the beautiful new Archives II building for the event. There were 13 corporate sponsors whose financial support helped make the gala especially successful.

With over 600 members, Friends of the Libraries sponsored a number of outstanding events on campus including cosponsorship of the University's popular Writers Here and Now Reading Series. Other Friends-sponsored events included an evening with author George Pelecanos, Maryland's Master of Pulp Fiction, and a special program featuring the Book Guys, Allan Stypeck and Mike Cuthbert, who provided free book appraisals. In addition, Friends assumed sponsorship of the campus' popular Investors Group which features knowledgeable people from the financial world each month. The Friends of the Libraries also committed $60,000 to support preservation of endangered library materials.

The Friends' Board consists of the following individuals: Allen Ahearn, Patricia Ahearn, Frank Boches, Jackson Bryer, Howard Frank, Dean Charles B. Lowry, Marcia Lowry, Courtney J. McKeldin, Ernest J. Notar, James Reveal, Allan Rough, Cynthia Sorrell, Sharon J. Stanczak, Allan Stypeck, and Calhoun Winton.
