Grants and Other Financial AssistanceAppointment of a full-time grants manager underscored the Libraries' commitment to greatly expanding its grant support program. Several grant-supported projects, especially relating to the Gordon W. Prange Collection, were in progress during the year and a number of other projects were in the application stage. In addition, as noted elsewhere, Dean Lowry led a trip to Japan in June to identify and pursue funding sources for the Prange Collection. The Libraries, the College of Library and Information Services (CLIS) and the Computer Science Department (CSD) received a Shared University Resources (SUR) grant from IBM for a digital libraries project to study multimedia data acquisition, searching and representation. Also, the National Trust Library received $108,000 for general program support through the auspices of an existing cooperative agreement with the federally-funded National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. Significant progress was made on the $158,000 National Endowment for the Humanities-supported project to microfilm the Katherine Anne Porter papers. The Libraries partnered with the College of Arts and Humanities on a proposal for a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant to create the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities.
