Transforming McKeldin and Hornbake LibrariesThe second task force, the Space Planning Task Force, was charged with devising a plan to transform McKeldin Library from a graduate library into a central campus library serving the needs of all researchers, undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. The implementation of the task force recommendations began over the early summer of 1998 and will continue through the next several years as most special collections departments are relocated to Hornbake Library. Work began late in the year on the first floor of McKeldin to create an improved information, reference, and referral desk and expanded workstation area. Planning efforts were directed at transforming the Hornbake Library into a facility for Special Collections and Nonprint Media Services. Hornbake Library will be refurbished over a period of several years with an initial $6 million in facilities renewal funds. Overhauling the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is the first order of business, to be followed by a renovation of the first and second floors. The first floor will feature a much-expanded Maryland Room, a relocated Katherine Anne Porter Room, a special events room, and exhibit space. Staff and collections associated with Marylandia & Rare Books, Archives & Manuscripts, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library will be relocated to the renovated first and second floors. In a subsequent phase, the National Public Broadcasting Archives and the Broadcast Pioneers Library of American Broadcasting will relocate to the third floor after the move of the Performing Arts Library to the new Maryland Center for the Performing Arts. Nonprint Media Services will eventually relocate to the ground floor of Hornbake Library.
